Annual Wallenberg Day To Salute Support for Ukrainian Refugees

January 22, 2023 @ 1:30 pm - 5:00 pm

The eighteenth annual Raoul Wallenberg Day in support of Civil Courage on January 22, 2023, will feature a salute to the humanitarian individuals and organizations assisting refugees from Ukraine since the start of Russia’s attack. The featured speaker is Marina Sonkina, a Vancouver writer and educator with family relations in Ukraine and Russia. Ms Sonkina volunteered to assist refugees at the Polish border with the Joint Distribution Committee, a leading Jewish humanitarian organization founded in 1914, which is being honoured at the meeting.

Gary Segal, a member of the JDC board, will also speak. Videos documenting JDC work on location will also be shown.

This in-person public event will be held Sunday, January 22, at 1:30 pm, at Congregation Beth Israel, 989 W 28th Ave at Oak Street, Vancouver.

Raoul Wallenberg Day in January honours the Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg and Japanese vice-consul Chiune Sugihara, who courageously rescued thousands from murder by the Nazis in World War Two, and is officially recognized by the City of Vancouver.
